Welcome to my website!

Ayubowan, Vanakkam, As-salamu alaykum and Hello!!

Over the years, I have written, spoken, and engaged with audiences across a range of platforms and media — and others have generously written about me and my work along the way.

I have now attempted to bring everything together in one place: my work, events, writing, and more, all here on this website for easy access.

I hope you find what’s here both informative and encouraging. I would love to hear your thoughts. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or would like to learn more. Stay in touch!

BIOGRAPHY

This is my story. I served as a central leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and have spent my career as an independent and passionate activist, fighting to advance and defend the rights to equality and non-discrimination.

At the heart of this work has been a commitment to challenging prejudice and injustice in all their forms, whether directed at individuals or communities on the basis of race, gender, belief, age, or sexual orientation.

Michael Cooke’s biography of me offers an invaluable perspective on the turbulent events that have unfolded in Sri Lanka since its independence.

I served as General Secretary of the JVP, but in February 1984, I resigned in protest of the party’s chauvinist positions on the Tamil question, a stance I could not reconcile with my own convictions.

Since October 1989, I have been living in exile with my family in Australia. From here, I continue my work, drawing on a rights-based approach to foster intercommunal harmony, both within Sri Lanka and among its diaspora communities around the world.
